Why the discrepancy regarding Pakistan's involvement in the raid on Bin Laden's compound?

I first read the story on Yahoo news the night it was initially reported and they said that the US did not work with Pakistan intelligence or the Pakistani government. It seemed strange to me that we had military helicopters and special forces with automatic weapons just 35 miles north of the capital without anyone knowing. So now reports are we did have their help. Who can explain all this? No one-liners, informed answers only please.
